Feeling a profound lack of emotions.
Many people I see have a lack of emotions; they say they feel as if they are detached from the world or can’t feel happiness, joy, etc.
Sometimes this is a side-effect of medications. Sometimes this is caused by medical issues. However, often we discover the real problem is, ironically, feeling too much. These people are overwhelmed, and burnt out, and their Unconcious just shuts everything down, to protect the system. Severe forms of this are called “Dissassociation” in Psychology and Psychiatry.
But everyone experiences this state at one time or another with varying levels of severity. It is most often a temporary issue, and slowly resolves as the pressure lessens. In addition, as we age, we naturally (but unhealthily) fall into this, which many just assume is the boredom of life.
One of the first things I do with people experiencing this phenomena is to get them in touch with a memory of feeling joy. These clients often cry simply remembering feeling something, and thus proving to themselves these emotions still exist inside of them and can be felt — giving them hope they will be able to feel happy again, naturally.
After that, we can work on clearing up unconscious misconceptions and work with the Conscious/Unconscious to come up with a plan to lessen the pressure the client is feeling. The result is a client that begins to feel again, in flashes to begin with, and longer and longer stretches of feeling “back to normal”.
I had one client realize s/he had gone an entire day without noticing s/he was “feeling normal”, and began having an anxiety attack (s/he has a diagnosed anxiety disorder) when they realized they forgot to be overwhelmed.
We had a good chuckle when I pointed out that s/he was assuming the world was crumbling again, and that it could just as easily (and more likely) be their “normal” state turning back on briefly, like a neglected lawn mower finally sputtering for a few seconds after 10,000 pulls on the starter.
If you would like to experience a “Happy Hypnosis” session, book a “Can I be hypnotized” session with SEE Hypnosis, or talk with your Hypnotist (if you already have one). It can be the difference between despair and Hope.
