FAQs:
Q: What is hypnosis? How can Hypnosis help me?
A: Hypnosis is the act of guiding someone into a state where the client can access their unconscious for deep change using profoundly deep focus. We call this the “trance state” or “hypnosis”, and it is a natural state for everyone.
Most of us go in and out of a trance state regularly. If you’ve ever zoned out while driving, fell into a reverie while listening to music, or found yourself immersed in the world of a book or movie, you’ve been in the trance state.
The only difference between hypnosis and these everyday trance states is that, in hypnosis, the hypnotist induces the trance state to achieve something for their client: healing, discovery, or stress relief, for example.
Q: What is a “Hypnotic State” or “trance state”?
A: As stated above, the trance state (or hypnotic state) is a natural state of focus and relaxation.
The American Psychological Association has defined a Hypnotic State as “A state of consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness characterized by an enhanced capacity for response to suggestion.”
Q: Can the hypnotist make me do anything I do not want to do?
A: A hypnotist cannot make you do anything you do not want to do. Unlike in the movies or TV, real hypnosis is entirely under the clients control. A client can stop the hypnosis process at any time. In addition, any suggestions the hypnotist may offer are going to be accepted or not accepted based on the needs, wants, desires and beliefs of the client. A hypnotist cannot control a client against their will, ever!
The healing comes from the client and the insights they find within themselves. The hypnotist is merely a guide in this process.
Q: Who can be hypnotized?
There seems to be a popular belief about who can or cannot be hypnotized, such as, “Only people with weak wills can be hypnotized,” or “I can’t be hypnotized.” Another common beliefs is, “I tried hypnosis, and I didn’t feel anything.”
Lets address these three:
“Only weak willed people can be hypnotized.” This is a myth, but I can see how this misconception could seem logical. If you resist hypnosis, you will not be hypnotized, therefore, if you think you will not be hypnotized, you most likely will not be hypnotizable — but … that is only if you go into hypnosis with that mind-set. If you go into hypnosis with the intent to get the most out of hypnosis, you will be hypnotized so long as you follow the instructions of your hypnotist. So is will power necessary for hypnosis? Yes. You have to actually try to not resist. If will power means doing what you intend to do, no matter the obstacles, than those that focus on the process and achieve hypnosis have used their will-power to be hypnotized. If your intent is to use your will-power to not be hypnotized, then yes, will-power will prevent you from being hypnotized.
If a client can push those doubts out of the way, by force of will, and surrender to the process, despite being dubious or a little apprehensive, I would consider this person quite strong of character.
“I can’t be hypnotized,” is another myth. Everyone that is of at least normal intelligence, who can follow directions can be hypnotized, if they desire to be.
Finally, the myth, “I tried hypnosis, and it didn’t work.” This is both true and false! It did work, it just wasn’t effective, or, more likely, you realized that hypnosis dosen’t feel any different than just sitting in a chair listening to someone talk.
Hypnotists are talking to your unconscious. Therefore, if you are sitting there listening to the hypnosis session, your conscious mind will not notice anything different. However, the truth is, your unconscious mind is in control at that point, and it is finally able to communicate directly.
I am also going to add that hypnosis dosen’t feel like anything but sitting in a chair and listening to someone talk, until it gets real — and weird. When that happens, and it will happen if you go through all the phases of 5-PATH hypnosis, you will know something unusual is happening. Something profound and powerful. At that point, you will probably revise your opinion on the previous sessions where nothing happened, and believe that, “Oh, that was doing the same thing, I just didn’t notice!”
Bottom line is: hypnosis is flat out weird, and it will work if you want it to. And when you really try, it feels like nothing has happened, and everything has changed for the better, at the same time.
